Since version 1.0.0 was introduced, IMO they're back on track. The developers droppedsupport for web embedded objects, and made some strange decisions about formatting and playback. On examination these usually return out to be enormously compressed microsoft formats and sometimes, on my slow machine, I find they play better second time through - which must be to do with emmory caching or the like. What I tend to do is convert everything I can to mpeg2 or flv, that makes things playable on most platforms, and gets rid of some playback artefacts. To be fair to thise who have had bad experiences: round about version 1.8.6, VLC went astray. Loads of other minority formats.Maybe I'm just lucky, but I haven't found a file VLC fails to play at all - except encrypted ones.I have had relatively few cases where there have been pixellation or dropouts. There's divx and xdiv, requiring proprietaty players.

There are loads of avi formats, and loads of codecs which you have to attempt to download to WIndows Movie Player (and often fail to find because they were never intended for published formats), there are mpeg formats that Quicktime tries to grab for itself, and fails on. It'll play corrupt files - terminating at the point the coruption gets bad.I also use it for movies.

I've been reading some of the hate mail lower down the review list, and I just don't recognise the VLC they're commenting on.I have thousands of mp3 flac wav mp4 m4a ape and many more formats, and VLC plays the lot. Its like the creator thought hey, those hitler subtitle videos are pretty funny and decided to make his own, but didnt realise that hes just a twat without any wit to speak of.Oh boy, the internet! It doesnt even bother to back up its statements. Give me 5 bullet points, not a three minute video of what VLC was like 3 years ago. This is like brand loyalty, except worse. That video was a waste of time, too. Ill keep bouncing around between programs as theyre updated and surpass each other. So I get a little frustrated and decide to use VLC again just for the hell of it, to see if it works. I havent really played around with the settings certainly not to a point where Id change something and not notice right away that it had stopped having subtitles to work. Eventually MPC randomly decides it doesnt feel like displaying subtitles anymore, so I switch to zoom, which is basically the same thing I guess then after a few months that wont do it anymore. I found MPC and used that for a few years.

Then I started having MKV files and on my old, 10 year old computer, they would start to slow down during fast action sequences and it was really irritating. flv support, and a lot of other nice tihngs. If this VLC feature doesn’t work well for you at the moment, try another way to watch local video files on your Chromecast. You know, about 3 years ago I used to use VLC for a lot of stuff. Having problems? This feature may just need some more time in the oven.

At the time of writing, pretty much any other way to play back video would be better, for example, loading local media up on a flash drive and playing it back via a smart TV or set-top box.

When I tested it on my PC and SHIELD, the video was playing back with a lot of missed frames and audio de-synced by about a second. Afterwards, you can play video files without accepting the certificate prompt again.Īgain, this feature is still in development. When you try streaming in the future, you’ll just need to use the Playback > Render menu to scan and connect.

That’s a VLC video running on the SHIELD via Chromecast. Use the controls in the VLC window to pause, fast forward, rewind, and otherwise control playback. The video file should immediately begin playing on your Chromecast after you agree, with your Chromecast streaming the file from the VLC player on your computer. Click “View certificate” to view your Chromecast’s security certificate.Ĭlick “Accept Permanently” to accept your Chromecast’s certificate. Use the Media > Open File menu or just drag and drop a video file from your file manager onto the VLC window.Īfter you try to play the video, you’ll see an “Insecure site” prompt. Open a video file in VLC and click the “Play” button. If your Chromecast already appears in the menu, click on it in the list. To find your Chromecast, you’ll need to click Playback > Renderer > Scan. You won’t find a “Cast” icon in VLC-at least, not at the moment.
